The Beirne Carter Foundation was established in 1986 by Beirne Blair Carter, founder of Carter Machinery, with a vision of supporting meaningful and lasting impact in the communities around us.
Built on values of generosity, opportunity, and service, the Foundation focuses on initiatives that strengthen health, education, youth development, community enrichment, and other evolving areas of need. Beirne believed philanthropy should remain flexible and responsive, a philosophy that continues to guide the Foundation today.
Through charitable giving and community support, the Beirne Carter Foundation carries forward a legacy of investing in people, organizations, and ideas that create positive change for future generations.

What We Do
The Beirne Carter Foundation supports nonprofit organizations and initiatives that strengthen communities and improve lives across Virginia. Our giving focuses on healthcare and medical research, education, early childhood development, environmental initiatives, and community welfare programs that serve underserved populations.
Through strategic grantmaking, the Foundation partners with organizations creating meaningful, lasting impact throughout the Richmond and Roanoke regions and beyond. Since 1989, the Foundation has awarded more than $42 million in grants supporting communities across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
